Sports Physicals
In addition to our recommended yearly physicals, we provide sports physicals for young athletes ready for another year of play and competition.
If your child plans to compete in athletics this year, we highly encourage you to schedule an appointment for a Preparticipation Physical Examination (PPE).
Certain organizations and teams have specific requirements or forms for their athletes. Check with your child’s school, coach, or club to understand the requirements for your child’s sports physical exam.
NCHSAA student-athletes can find their forms here.

What happens during a sports physical?
A sports physical helps determine whether an athlete is healthy for competition in a certain sport.
Most states and organizations require teens and children to have a sports physical annually or before each new competitive season.
However, even if a sports physical is not required, annual exam examinations for pediatrics are recommended.
The two components in a sports physical are:
- medical history
- physical exam

Medical History
This section of the examination includes questions about:
- Relevant family medical history
- Relevant personal medical history (surgeries)
- Current medications
- Chronic health conditions (i.e. asthma or diabetes)
- Allergies
- Symptoms of chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath with or without activity
The medical history often comes as a form to fill out prior to the physical exam.

Physical Exam
During the physical portion of the exam, the doctor will typically:
- Current height and weight
- Blood pressure and pulse
- Vision and Hearing testing
- Comprehensive physical examination
- Brief mental health exam
- Movement, flexibility, and strength assessment of joints.
- Hernia exam (males)
Factors such as age, sex, and whether your child has started puberty may affect the requirements for the exam.
The use of some substances can impact the health of the athlete. A doctor will also ask questions regarding drug, alcohol, or dietary supplement use.
